One of my favorite things in my home is my spiffy blue Samsung washer and dryer, inherited from the previous owner.
Every time I walk into that laundry room I grin, because that blue color just plain makes me happy. You likely have now figured out it doesn’t take much to keep me entertained. Most of us share the task of washing and drying, well maybe some more than others, just ask any mother with young kids. But I wonder if there could possibly be some spiritual lessons we might learn in that pile of laundry. Just hear me out.
One of the basics of our faith is a person who was lost, then turns around and goes in the opposite direction. “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” Acts 3:19
When we ask him, God cleanses us instantly. In a split second. To be cleansed of our sin by the God of the universe means to leave behind all of the crud, like addiction, anger, hate, unforgiveness, resentment and the list goes on and on. You know what burdens you carry, and you can fill in the blanks yourself.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” I John 1:7
Purifies means we are made clean.
Unlike God, my washer takes 28 minutes on the Eco Wash cycle to do a tub of dirty clothes, and the dryer may take 60 minutes depending on the load.
When you ask God to forgive your sins and take control of your life, what happens next? I’m glad you asked, because there is a Warranty provided that comes with your decision. That is because God loves you more than anyone on the face of the earth. You heard me right. Even more than your mom and dad, your grandparents, siblings or even your spouse and children.
The service Warranty on your appliances has terms and limits and eventually runs out. But your new relationship with Jesus never ever runs out, it stays with you even after you pass from this life on to the next.
God willingly sent his son Jesus to earth to live and die for us, taking all of our sins upon himself on the cross. After conquering death, he rose again 3 days later so we would have eternal life. That Warranty is the assurance of a close intimate relationship we can experience with our God. Who wouldn’t want that?
What is the next step?
Confess, asking for God’s forgiveness of your sins and ask him to take control of your life.
Find a church fellowship with warm loving people who care for one another, who will come alongside you as you learn about Jesus.
If you don’t have a bible, buy one. The Message is a bible written in contemporary language that is easy to understand. Start reading in the Gospel of John.
Pray daily asking God to give you a mature spiritual mentor to disciple you as you grow in your faith.
If you have never asked Jesus to come into your heart, why don’t you join me in praying this prayer:
Dear Lord, I’m a sinner. Please forgive me. Come into my life and cleanse me of my unbelief. I believe in you and in salvation through the blood of Jesus. I turn from sin and trust in Jesus alone as my Savior. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
There is no greater gift than a relationship with Jesus. My hope is that you will come to him and experience new life.
Maybe that washer and dryer sitting in your laundry room will now remind you to think of Jesus, and the cleansing and refining he offers to all of us.
How do you do that Rox? You keep writing interesting pieces. I like the laundry because I have it too…we all do. I like my little inherited laundry room because it is painted a cool blue and it makes me happy too. THANK YOU , I NEED this today. I would have become a Christian but I am already one! Love you , Sara
This is a great post! Thank you, Rox!
