I am a writer, and this is my 50th post on Substack.
Ten months ago, my writing coach suggested that my style of writing would be well suited as a blog, and writing regularly and posting on Substack would improve my writing skills. Have I mentioned that my coach is a very wise man.
Recently there was a discussion among Christian writers in my online community about how we view writers. Abby, one of our coach’s had us take 5 minutes to free write on that subject, and the discussion after the exercise was extremely interesting. Some stated they had this romantic image of writing within the solitude of a cabin in the mountains. That idea is so appealing, but likely not realistic. Most of our group write in short segments, not day-long blocks of time, probably like 30 minutes to an hour.
The best tip Jeff Miller, my writing coach taught me is setting an alarm and writing for at least one hour each day. For me the hour usually ends up being longer. Writing daily is his second-best tip, and Jeff is one of the people I know personally who is disciplined enough to do that.
The writer friends I have found within my community are as varied as the colors in nature. They have become a beautiful blessing in my life because we share such different backgrounds and perspectives. We all have various levels of education and training, and oh my word do we have some humor.
Dr. Sara is an educator living in Texas with years of experience not only in the classroom, but with writing curriculum and training teachers. Bob in Ohio is in the process of editing his third book on the Bible, which will be published soon. Shiny in Canada is just starting her first book, and so is Lisa in Arizona. Living in SC is Jody who is writing about generosity; Derek already has his first children’s book published earlier this year and is working on more. Caroline is in Kenya, Africa and writing a book for parents on how to share the gospel. Kelly in Illinois is recovering from the loss of his spouse and sorting through his grief and exactly what he wants to say in his book.
Community promotes growth. Tonight, you have a golden opportunity to become part of a community that will help you grow as a writer. This free online event called Kingdom Author Challenge takes place for one hour each night this week. Maybe you have no interest in writing a book, or you write a newsletter for your family or organization. But maybe like I was, you’ve thought about writing a book and have no idea where to begin. You need to know that your story is important and needs to be shared.
We are talking about one little hour a night for five nights. Good grief, you could probably stand on your head and spit quarters for an hour if you had to!
I have personally invited family members, friends, and even strangers to attend this webinar, because I am sort of prejudiced. Because I believe Jeff, my mentor, coach, editor, and friend is the best! His heart is in the right place, and I don’t want you to miss this opportunity to meet him. After working with him and his wonderful Team, I’d offer a money back guarantee, except that the webinar is FREE!
Tonight is the night. Click right here on the Kingdom Author Challenge link and register. Then grab your notebook and pen and be ready at 7:00 PM CST or 8:00 PM EST to learn about writing and publishing.
This is the day, the day you need to step out in faith. To try something new. It’s time to tell your story. Let’s do this together.
I don’t know if I could stand on my head and spit quarters for an hour, but I could chuckle at that expression for an hour. :)
I don’t know if my last post went through, but I just wanted to say that I am not sure how you got into writing, but I love reading your post that you sent. Love you, my friend.
